Hello, have you SEEN THE PRICES on those dresses? They’re simply going to be outgrown in all of two minutes – practically as soon as you pull them over your baby’s head and get in a couple of “oh, so cute”s! A random selection of more recession-appropriate prices, for dresses that are equally adorable…

Some of them are expensive, some of them are not.
We here in the Manolosphere like to look at pretty things. Sometimes, those things are something we cannot afford, but it doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the cuteness.
As for Target, I applaud their price points, but I have always been disappointed in their quality. I stopped buying from them long ago.

They’re all cheaper than Manolos, and this IS the Manolosphere.

Hi Glinda, I take your point about Tarjay’s quality, but respectfully beg to differ – at least on the issue of young girls’ clothes. I have three girls and the sheer cuteness, affordability and really reasonable quality of their clothes has had me going back there time and again. Key point also being that at this age, aren’t we really dressing them up for ourselves? Makes it a bit hard for me to justify spending that kind of money on thier play-type clothes. My 18 month old is utterly oblivious to what she’s wearing unless it hampers her ability to climb the nearest tall/ precarious object!
Having said that, I’m not by any means advocating that people SHOULD buy from Target; these were just an example of what’s out there at recessionista price points- with a little time and effort, you’ll find great quality clothes for kids at TJ Maxx etc. It just seems a bit odd to me that in a time where everyone’s having to tighten their financial belts, suggestions couldn’t be more price-conscious **across the board**… I love the Manolo-sphere and have hung out in it for years now – I sort of can tell the difference between one of the’ yeah, lovely but totally unaffordable item of lust’ articles and one of the ‘these prices are nice/great bargain’ articles. This is leaning towards the latter category, in my view.
For what it’s worth, I find myself in the incredibly blessed position of not being financially strapped at all – I’m just conscious that I’m in the vast minority these days (and super-thankful for it!)
BTW – Seriously, the checkerboard dress that costs $160-odd is not… umm… how to put this… cute!

sunf- I think we can agree that this is simply a list of dresses.
People are free to buy or not to buy as they see fit. No one is putting a gun to anyone’s head and forcing them to get one of these dresses. Usually if I’m focusing on bargain prices, I will say exactly that in my title, and also include the post under the category “Bargain Alert.” I didn’t do either of those things with this list.
And I think it is par for the course that not everyone is going to agree on fashion, these are just some that caught my eye. As for the dress you are referring to, I think it is very striking and my bet is that it is one of those that would look better on.
However, if you dislike only one of the fourteen, I think that my batting average is not all that bad!

Wow, Glinda. It’s definitely just a list of dresses, we totally agree on that point. I’m guessing my basic argument – which is that with all that’s going on out there re: economic/financial woes, many of these prices for children’s clothing go over like a lead balloon – hasn’t received a warm reception.
No worries however, I was just hoping the recession-conscious trend I’ve seen in even high-end magazines, blogs and retailers would be replicated in a blog that I read often and respect. These media outlets I refer to haven’t declined one bit in the quality, style and trendiness of their clothing, shoes, decorating etc. suggestions; they’ve just become a bit more sensitive to the very real (and for many, including readers of this esteemed blog, dire) economic situation out there.
And I will hop off my soapbox at this point. Thanks!

There’s recession-conscious and then there’s recession-conscious. One of those media outlets you refer to features as their Item of the Week Les Halles jeans at “half the price of most designer jeans” only $120 a pair.

Yeah, raincoaster. I’ll take an adult’s pair of jeans that may (may, ok!) conceivably be justified by its cost per wear over a few years, over the $160 girl’s party dress in the list above – to be outgrown in 6 months, tops.
