Monday Teeny Poll

88% of you were not affected by the Aurora shooting in making your movie-going decisions.  Although from the comments, it just might be because you don’t really attend the movies a lot as a general rule.  8% said you were reluctant to attend a movie, and it made 4% of you hesitant to send your older kids.  I have to say that my  husband and I saw The Dark Knight Rises last Wednesday and I was definitely keeping a closer eye than normal on my fellow audience members.  Side note: babysitting is expensive!

Today I am all about the kerfuffle in New York over a supposedly well-meaning health initiative that treats bottles of baby formula like prescription medicine.

72% of you say that expensive is not necessarily the way to go when it comes to buying new children’s furnishings.  The rest are all for it, and I’m not against that either.  It’s just that I’ve seen my son’s casual disregard for anything that isn’t electronic, so I’m loathe to purchase something expensive. Because I’m pretty sure he will just do something dumb and ruin it.

Heck, when I was his age I ruined the furniture in my room by neglecting to put a coaster under my glasses, and I was fairly conscientious.  There were dressers we could have gotten from family members, but I needed a tall chest of drawers rather than a long dresser, and all anybody had were the long dressers. So, cheap furniture it was!

Today I would like to know if the tragic shooting in Colorado has colored how you feel about attending the movies, at least for the short term.

An overwhelming majority, 89%, stated that stay at home dads are cool.  10% felt that moms should be the primary caregivers.  I have to say I’m with the majority on this one.  I think that if dad staying home works for that family, then have at it!  Dads bring a different energy to child raising (at least the ones that I know) and I don’t think that is a bad thing.

Now, we recently got rid of my son’s all-in-one loft bed for a raised bed without the desk/dresser components.  He was simply too tall for it, and as his ceiling is not vaulted, was feeling a bit claustrophobic.  In fact, he wouldn’t come straight out and tell us that he hated sleeping up there, he kept faking stomach aches and asking to sleep on the couch.  Seriously?  I thought we were better at communicating than that.  But after a few days my husband and I sussed it out.  Kids, they kill me.  Well, my kids, specifically.

Anyhoo, that left us with needing to buy him a dresser.  We took a bit of time deciding which of these routes to go.  Which one would you take?

55% of you did a big fat whole lot of nothing on the 4th of July, while 44% of you were planning on attending some sort of home-based gathering.  Not a single soul was going to see professional fireworks, which if you live in the San Diego area, was probably a good idea.  There are so many people in the area I live, going to see professional fireworks usually means getting stuck in traffic for an hour just trying to get out.  So, none for us.

Today I’m all about the male half of the parenting equation (assuming the father is present in the home, and breast feeding is not an on-going concern.).

70% of you lay the blame of the Karen Klein incident mostly at the feet of the parents.  They’ve got to learn that from somewhere, right? I showed parts of the video to my son and made it extremely clear that if he were to ever speak to anyone in that manner, his father and I would punish him severely.  17% find fault with the kids, and it is true to some extent that by the time they are in the tweens and teens, they can fall into behavior that would possibly shock their parents.  11% say placing blame is useless, but I disagree with that sentiment.

Today, I want to know your plans for the 4th… (apologies to my international readers)

Aaaah, ladies after my own heart! 57% of you never pay retail if you can possibly help it, and 28% say more than they would like, which could be that they don’t pay retail 8% of the time, but that’s still too much for them.  9% say quite a bit, and 4% of you say almost never.  I would say that usually the only thing I pay “retail” for is groceries, but I try to be a bargain shopper as much as possible.  But, I don’t clip coupons.

Now, I’m sure all of you have at least heard about the incident of Karen Klein, school bus monitor, being horribly bullied by some tween and teen boys.  I watched a bit of the video, but had to turn it off after just a few minutes.  People are calling for the kids’ heads, and Karen now has over $500,000 in donations to her name, as well as a trip to Disneyworld.  There is much debate as to who is to blame for what happened, ranging from the parents to the kids to the school district. What do you think?

Hey, remember last week when I said my computer was fixed?

Well, it wasn’t.  Or at least I did something else to piss it off which also had to be fixed, which we really haven’t determined yet.  Either way, almost a week on the computer, lost. I was given a laptop to ostensibly use, but I hated the thing so much I just glanced at some headlines, glanced at my emails to see if anything big was happening, and hopped off.

So, apologies and onwards and upwards and all that jazz…

My last poll question was regarding cruises, and the majority of responses (45%) said that they hadn’t and had no desire to.  27% haven’t but would like to, and the next two responses of “yes, and it was great” and “I have, but it wasn’t what it was cracked up to be” were split with 13% each.

I must admit wanting to try cruising at least once.  I have my eye on a Disney cruise as soon as my daughter is old enough to stop throwing tantrums, which at this rate might be in five years or so.

Anyhoo, I’ve been shopping a lot lately, and want to know:

What’s that, you say?  I wasn’t here Friday or yesterday?

Well, you can blame my computer for that.  Even though it isn’t that old, there was something wrong with the cooling system and we had to get it fixed.

Boo.

Anyhow, 55% of you say that the best meal you ever ate was in a restaurant, and I would have to agree.  I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy a dinner at the famed Club 33 at Disneyland (thanks, Marc!) for our 3rd wedding anniversary.   Not many people get to go up a French lift to get to their meal. And man, it was good.  My flat iron steak was tasty, but the memory I have of the cheese course still makes my mouth water.

And now, with summer breathing down our necks, I want to know what you think about cruises.  A friend of mine recently took her first cruise with her husband and son, and has already signed up for their next one.
