Monday Teeny Poll

By Glinda

54% of you have no pity for the uncaring parent of a toddler who is having a public meltdown.  Which, let’s admit, is pretty much going to happen at least once if your toddler ever leaves the house.  36% can totally walk a mile in the suffering parent’s shoes, 6% try to ignore it, and 3% say shut up already. I recently thought about how I react, and usually I’m pretty sympathetic.  Probably moreso now that I’ve got one of my own right now that is quite a few notches up on the “difficult” scale.

But, let’s talk about Halloween!  To me, it is always a big bummer when Halloween falls on a school night.  Not that it’s a big deal for us this year, but for many other people, it puts a bit of a kibosh on the festivities.  It seems at least one lawmaker agrees with me, and earlier this year introduced a bill (in his state, that is) to have Halloween celebrated on the last Saturday in October, no matter the date.

This weekend, my neighborhood had trick or treating on Saturday night and only in designated areas. Parents have to pay and have to contribute candy, even if they will be handing out candy at their house.

My city had trick or treating on Sunday afternoon.

There were no trick or treaters on my block on Monday night, but 1.5 miles away, they were trick or treating.

I think it’s nuts. Why not just trick or treat ON HALLOWEEN?

I asked some book club friends about it and one said, “But I don’t want my kids out on a school night,” which seemed dumb to me. It’s one night. One night out of the whole year, plus it’s not like they would be out until midnight.

Why can’t we celebrate holidays on the day they actually happen?

class factotum and i live in the same city. trick or treat has always been on the sunday before halloween here. well, at least since 1977, when i moved here at the age of 7. in my neighborhood, our trick or treat was from 4-6, in the village just south of me, it was from 2-4. i’ve heard of neighborhoods (meaning a few blocks get together) coordinating night trick or treat on halloween, but from what i know of those, it’s optional to participate, and you don’t have to pay, you just get whatever candy you want and turn your porch light on, so kids know the house is participating.

personally, i wouldn’t care about trick or treating at night on a school night. heck, it’s dark by 6:30 or so this time of year, it’s not like they are going to be out until midnight.
