Why I’m a Bad Parent- Part One of a Bazillion

By Glinda

Because I have absolutely no qualms about taking my son out of school early next Friday and going to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One.

Perhaps because it’s a Friday afternoon before a short holiday week, where I know nothing academically substantive is going to be missed.

Oh, who the hell am I kidding.

I would take him out even if there was something academically substantive happening.

Because he read the entire series over the summer and he is absolutely mad for everything Harry Potter, I want to indulge that a little bit.  He was much too young for all of the extremely awesome book release parties that occurred for almost the entire series, and he should get to experience at least some of the hysteria that comes with an important pop culture moment, don’t you think?  There is only one movie left after this one, and after that, it’s fini.

Well, if you don’t agree, I don’t care.  I’ll be sitting in a movie theater next Friday at noon, sharing a bucket of popcorn and some Skittles with my son.

Because I’m a bad parent like that.

Sounds good to me. I’m getting spoiled, my best friend and honorary Aunt to my children decided to have a private screening of HP on Sunday the 21st- yes opening weekend! We’re blowing off Sunday school for this event.

It’s a special birthday present to herself.

    I love you for this!

It’s a great way to teach your kid about priorities. Every once in a great while giving your kid a super-special day of fun in an otherwise (more of less) responsible life gives him the chance to understand how to balance what’s important (studying and working) with what’s important (taking time to celebrate special moments).

I still remember with great fondness the handful of times my parents would keep me out of school for some family adventure. It was maybe 8 times total (so less than once per year) but I remember each of those days vividly. And it didn’t hurt my academic achievement in the least.

excuse me, now I have to go for a bike ride in the last warm day of fall.

Rebel. My mother let me sleep outside waiting for Star Wars to open, but I was in high school. Her words of advice: “stay under the awning and don’t get pregnant”.

Good for you. I stood in line with my son until 1:30 in the morning to get the last book so that he would be able to experience the cultural phenomenon that is Harry Potter. Coincidntally, several bars were located near by and while overall the experience was a good one, stupid drunk people suck. The munchkin will remember not having to go to school so he could do something special with his mom, and that’s what counts.
