Ten Iconic Animated Character Dresses
The other day I was browsing around and stumbled upon a “famous dresses” list from movies. It included the white dress Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch and of course, Audrey Hepburn’s black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Then I got to thinking, what about dresses that adorn animated characters? I would actually argue that they are more instantly recognizable than almost all of the movie dresses.
Here’s my list:
Minnie Mouse
Nobody rocks the polka dots quite like Minnie.
Cinderella
Worn by little girls the world over.
Stone “pearls” and animal fur equals yabba dabba do!
She wore this in the famous dance scene, the one where everyone is thinking the Prince looked better as the Beast.

She’s not bad, she’s just drawn that way!
A demure English pouf of a dress.
Strapless dress to wash the dishes? No problem!
The only dress on the list to defy gravity.
A one of a kind, the high collar and red cutouts on the sleeve are key.
All right, technically not a dress. But who’s gonna argue with me?

I’m behind all these except Belle, who is a realtively new “annimated” character, and not at all known to boys who don’t have sisters.
I kinda feel the same way about Belle. Being “old school” I would suggest adding Betty Boop & Olive Oyl.
@Seana- Agreed, she isn’t as well known to boys, but my son has no clue who Cinderella or any of these are except for Minnie Mouse and Velma. I’m sure he will once his sister hits video viewing age, though.
@gemdiva- I had considered both of those. I decided that Betty Boop’s dress was not her main identifying feature, it was more her face and hair. Her dress is just a short, strapless that I think if someone were to wear by itself, it would bring no association.
As for Olive Oyl, she is definitely someone with a limited recognition factor. And I never liked her. So maybe that has something to do with me not including her.
I’m ALL FOR Belle being on this list. I actually got a tiny bit upset when I realized that my husband and I miss the opportunity to dress up like Belle and her Prince at our wedding.
I told my 5-year old daughter that Belle is my favorite Disney princess because she likes books. My daughter told me that was weird.
