Things I Love: Sophie the Giraffe

Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether

Yes, I love a teething toy, which is not something I ever thought I would write.

I mean, it is after all just a teething toy.

But to anyone with a crabby, uncomfortable infant who is teething knows, teething toys can be lifesavers for everyone involved. I was also skeptical that so much money needed to be spent on a teething toy, as Sophie is perhaps three times as expensive as most others.

Let me assure you, she is well worth the money.

Most teething toys are hard plastic, but Sophie is soft, soft, soft. She is light and easy for even my four month old to grip. She has lots of different parts of her body to gnaw on, including ears, legs, and neck.

Alhtough I have to say it is slightly disconcerting to watch my daughter bite a giraffe’s behind, as Sophie is fairly realistic looking.  Even more disconcerting is the fact that I call Sophie by name and then encourage my daughter to bite her.  But such is the bizarre world of parenting an infant.  Let’s just  hope she never has a friend named Sophie.

As an added bonus, Sophie has a squeaker and I have yet to find a baby that hates a squeaker.

Sophie is BPA and pthalate-free, making her a winner all around.

I received no compensation or free product for this review.

I bought this for Christmas for my grandaughter, knowing that she was going to have major surgery on 2/26 (which was very successful!). The plus for me was the unique smell of Sophie. It was the only toy she wanted when her eyes were swollen shut from the surgery. She LOVES her Sophie! Her eyes were swollen shut, but she could still identify her toy by its smell and it seemed very comforting.

I didn’t believe the hype at first, thinking that Sophie was only popular due to being a) expensive and b) from France.

But, someone got Sam one as a gift, and I have to confess, he really loves it. While most toys get dropped easily due to his unsteady grip, he has no problem hanging on to Sophie, due to her spindly legs and neck. We recently went to visit my mother, which is a 5-hour car trip each way. And while he wasn’t sleeping, he was hanging on to his Sophie, gnawing contentedly at one of her legs.

He has two teeth coming in, and has been really fussy. Right now he’s in his bouncy chair next to my desk, while I bounce him with one foot and hum him a lullaby, and he’s got Sophie’s ear in his mouth.

I’m now a convert. I’d rather my kid have just a few really good, quality, long-lasting toys that he enjoys than 20 pieces of dollar store crap that he’ll use once and cast aside.

TYGran, poor baby! I’m so glad the surgery was a success!

    LPA- Agreed on all counts.

My daughter loved Sophie–unfortunately, she’s kinda grown out of her now, even though she’s still teething at seventeen months. We had Sophie v.1, a baby shower gift who eventually got lost, then Sophie v.2, who got left in a supermarket, I think, then Sophie v.3 was procured. Sophie was such a favorite toy we didn’t want to be without one for long. Soon after we bought the latest Sophie, Sophie v.1 was found under Nana’s couch! So we currently have two Sophies, one at Nana’s house, one sadly residing in my car as I try to get the trapped audience of Aurora interested in her again. “Look, here’s Sophie!” “Why don’t you chew on Sophie instead of your fingers!? No? OK, I’ll play with Sophie then…” <Squeak, squeak!)

TyGran–Yay for the successful surgery! Poor baby though.

Anyway, yeah, Sophie is a wonderful toy, totally worth the price. Just make sure not to lose her. I even bought a "Sophie Saver" on Etsy, which my daughter promptly also lost (it's a leash, like a pacifier keeper.)
