Things I Hate: Coffee

coffee_poster

Yes, you read that right.

I hate coffee.

I”ve never liked it, even when my dad would give me sips of his (black) coffee as a kid.  Well, maybe that is why I dislike it so much, as coffee with nothing in it is akin to unfiltered motor oil.

In this Starbucks nation, I am a tea drinker, which puts me in some assuredly tiny minority of people who have never ever tasted a Frappuccino.

And don’t anyone try to tell me what I’m missing, because I know that I am missing absolutely nothing.

Even the name turns me off, reminding me of all sorts of things. Tuberculosis comes first to mind.

Coffee leaves a horrid taste in my mouth that nothing short of sandblasting my mouth can get rid of.  Not to mention the bad breath, and coffee lovers, you are deluding yourselves that you are immune from the dreaded fire-breathing coffee effect.

Give me tea any day.  I”ll take it green, or Earl Grey, or Darjeeling, or any number of ways except perhaps for orange.    Sit me down at a formal tea, and I am a happy girl, delicately partaking of my scones, lemon curd, and clotted cream.

Listen, there is tea picked by monkeys and there is coffee pooped by monkeys.

That tells me all I need to know.

I am somewhat confused. The post was supposed to be about coffee, yet you make reference only to a company which serves liquified charcoal masquerading as a drinkable beverage…

I find proper tea much harder to find when out than coffee. A good diner or donut shop will nearly always yield a wonderful, medium roast, cup of coffee; most dedicated coffee shops will cater to those who don’t know the difference between “dark roast” and “burnt”. A good Italian or Middle Eastern joint will provide an exquisite dark roast.

As far as tea goes, I have a hard time finding any place that will do more than a bag of powder dipped in significantly less than boiling water. As a result, I only drink tea at home. At home, we use mostly loose leaf, steeped in vessels which are essentially sock-shaped bags of cheesecloth which allow proper room for the leaves to expand.

I enjoy both greatly, but only when done properly. Otherwise, either one is little more than swill.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who isn’t a fan of Starbucks. I’m not crazy about Tim Horton’s either.

The best coffee I ever had was at this little hotel in Holland. I think it was just Douwe-Egberts coffee, so maybe it was the water, or the machine, or the way they mixed it…I don’t know. But it was absurdly rich and smooth. It was to Starbucks coffee what good loose tea is to a dollar store teabag. Not even the same animal.

i hate coffee also. i do like how it smells, and i make it every morning for my husband (i enjoy the whole ritual: grinding the beans, pouring the hot water into the french press, doctoring it up with sugar/cream/flavored syrup in the thermos). i never drink the stuff though — tastes awful. i like some tea, but mostly, i enjoy my cup of hot cocoa every morning (starbucks makes nasty hot cocoa too).

I love coffee. Love it love it love it. Best part of my day is the slow spread of warm happiness as the caffeine percolates throughout my bloodstream. I used to carry boxes of Curiously Strong mints to take care of the fire-breathing aftereffects.

I like tea, too, but coffee has been my comfort for decades.

I am an equal opportunity caffeine consumer… Coffee- a blend of Sumatran and French Roast ground at home and brewed in my French Press with fresh cream and a bit of chocolate. Tea- Earl Grey, Oolong, Darjeeling, Hot. Iced- Luisianne :-) Coco—yes! This is why mouth wash was invented.
