I don’t get this. Why don’t I get this?
You never cheated against a five-year-old to make sure you’d win? You’re a nicer person than Grandpa then!
You mean it’s not about white privilege and US race relations?
But, TeleriB, they’re both black. I wondered if it was about ageism…
But Raincoaster, I think you’re right. I think I’ve done that once or twice to end the neverending game of Candyland.
Huh? No, it’s not about race relations or ageism. It’s about cheating to win. I can see that I need to start a poker club and invite all of you people who are nice than me to play; I’d make a fortune!
Except that in card games, you don’t usually exhort the losing person to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps.” That particular cliche doesn’t make tons of sense in the context of a card game. In a card game that’s a metaphor for the unfairness of life, though, it fits perfectly.
We could embrace the power of ‘and.’ Grandpa is clearly cheating at cards, and perhaps making a grown-up joke and teaching a lesson all at the same time.
TeleriB, you obviously haven’t played euchre with as many winnebago-driving Rotarians as I have. It’s their response to virtually any situation, looking at the younger, healthier people and telling them to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps.” It’s why I don’t hang around the bocce pits in the park anymore.
