Moms Who Love Their Lethal Weapons
By Glinda
As if we didn’t already have enough to worry about in our lives, here come the Moms packing heat, and proud of it!
Another mother — eight months pregnant and with a young child — declared that “our gun is the only way I could defend myself and my children should someone intend to do us harm.”
And there was this disclosure from a police officer mom: “I keep a loaded 9mm in my Coach diaper bag.”
A gun in your diaper bag? Are you nuts?
I mean, do you know how hard it is to find anything in those diaper bags?
I had a difficult enough time finding my son’s favorite teething toy, much less being able to find a gun. And digging through the gaping maw that is the Coach diaper bag in time to point it at the bad guy before he gets away?
Fuhgeddaboudit.
You’d have better luck chucking a bottle at his head.

I hate to even say it out loud, but it’s also worth mentioning– my toddler LOVES digging around in the diaper bag when I’m not looking, no matter how hard I try to keep it out of reach. She learned to climb on chairs BECAUSE OF THE DELICIOUS DIAPER BAG! To keep a loaded gun in there– that would be completely nuts!

I’ve actually thought about getting a concealed-carry permit and a handgun. The stories about crazed teens/etc gunning down innocents in malls/schools/churches freak me out–the only thing that seems to stop them is a) running out of ammo b) someone else with a gun. If I were out with my family and someone insane opened fire, I want there to be someone to fire back in defense. And the only way to ensure that happening is to carry my own gun.
Not that I’ve gotten around to it. And, of course, the nuts go to places where concealed carry is banned (schools, malls, etc) so it wouldn’t do me much good in the places I worry about. Nor do I think I would leave it the diaper bag, loaded. That seems a slight violation of basic gun safety.

The only crazed mall/church/school gunners of whom I’m aware who’ve been shot down have been shot down by law enforcement officers or themselves. You can see the statistics on TheCrimeLibrary.com.

I wear my .380 on my belt, in the back, underneath my shirt. The only time it’s really awkward is when I’m trying to nurse and my shirt rides up, possibly “unconcealing” my carry. It’s illegal in my state to carry in such a way to make the firearm not under my direct control at all times, so I can’t put it in a diaper bag or purse, it has to be on my person. I don’t carry to school, where it’s illegal, or to work, where it could get me fired, but anywhere else that it’s legal, it’s a good bet I have my gun.

Raincoaster:
I actually only know of two: one at a Virginia law school several years before the VA Tech shooting (no defensive shots fired, but two of the 3 students who stopped the guy were armed with guns) and the Colorado church shooting last year, when the gunman was stopped by a volunteer security guard who was a former policewoman. She ran towards the attacker yelling stop and shot him when he didn’t (though the gunman probably died of a self-inflicted wound). In both those cases, 3-5 people were killed, rather than 15-30:
