Oh, what different worlds we live in. No beach balls? No tunes? No sports equipment, not so much as a boogie board?

And, of course, because I live in Canada we also take wetsuits, jackets, and thermoses of coffee, except right in Vancouver where you can get lattes at the beach concession stands.

My thinking is this: with a sand castle set, a kid can play alone. With a beach ball or frisbee, the kid can make new friends. In fact, if his parents won't play with him, he pretty much HAS to. This is part of the whole going-to-the-beach experience. The power of the beach ball is not to be underestimated!

Packing for the beach can get complicated and if it's crowded, parking can be a be-yotch especially at the little local spots. My 5 y.o. and (almost) 10 y.o. old have to carry their own stuff like little pack-mules.

I'd like to add:
that giant, long-handled shovel for $5. Kids love those things so they can dig to China; and the folding beach chair that straps on like a backpack. Absolutely essential.
