Monday Teeny Poll
By GlindaToday finds me out on the road, beginning my first day of vacation. Due to the wonders of technology, I am able to write this in advance. Surely a device which connects from the brain to the keyboard, thus erasing that cumbersome typing thing, is next.
We planned this trip months ago, before the price of gasoline was close to five dollars a gallon. But, there would be no backing out, no matter how painful the bill. Unless we wanted to forfeit our hotel reservations and annoy the relatives who have been expecting us to visit.

We have two road trips planned for July and one in October for our anniversary. One is a family reunion, one of those “it may be the last time we see Uncle Moe” kind, so we can’t miss it. We’ll just up the gas budget next month and take it out of somewhere else. Thankfully we both have cars with fairly good gas mileage and I like driving.

I love road trips. When I was a kid, that was pretty much the only way we traveled cross-country. We got to see a lot of things and different ways of life.
We make the drive from SoCal to SF, and we never seem to really drive each other crazy. We try to stop in different places each time. The kids are great travelers, even without a DVD player in back.
Have a great time!

does it count as a road trip if you’re moving across the country?

My husband really loves road trips. We did a major one last November so he could be the Best Man in his friend’s wedding, plus two side visits to see friends of mine (but it was only for a total of 5 days). We’re thinking of re-creating that road trip with a longer timetable after our first child is born this August. We’ll decided based on how the baby is and ho i’m feeling.

We went on cross country road trips (MI to ID) when I was a kid, and I loved them. So far as a family, we’ve only gone to Florida. We’re planning on going again in the fall, but are strongly considering flying, partly due to gas prices. Any trips to show my kids the glories of the Rocky Mountains will have to wait, as that would really be an expensive trip!

Does bussing count? I prefer passenging to driving, and now Greyhound lets you reserve the seat of your choice for a bit extra; having the right-hand window seat in the first row through the Rockies is definitely worth an extra fifteen bucks!

We always take a couple of long weekends (we’d like longer, alas) to go camping at the beach in our Airstream. Luckily, we aren’t too far from the beach and Airstreams are a lot easier on mpg than conventional trailers. It’s too much a part of summer to completely skip, but we are staying closer to home than we have in the past.

Over here in Ireland, I pay US$7.72 per gallon of petrol, and we have the second-cheapest in Europe, allegedly. In France next week, I will pay US$8.59 (assuming US gallon = 3.78L). We manage just fine.
I do not mean to offend anyone, and I do realise that when such a commodity increases so rapidly that it can be difficult to manage, but please recognise that most of the rest of the world pays way over what you do for petrol. We just drive more efficient cars. (Mine is a 1L Nissan Micra.)

It’s true. North America is the land where the SUVs roam wild.
