Kids today seem to be a lot more sexuallly advanced then when I was in school. Back when I went to prom, we wore Jessica McClintock dresses with big poofy sleeves and plenty of tafeta. But then again, our teen idols were Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. TV was a lot different back then, too. The Huxtables would never have done what half the shows do now. Life is just different and frankly, it scares me a bit to think about what it will be like when my daughter reaches the age of prom!

My parents were never afraid to speak out about that sort of stuff. They raised their four daughters to be very aware of those kinds of things and also see it for what it was. I hope to do the same thing with my kids. I think that a big part of their success was that they limited the media that we consumed. We could only watch TV on weekends and that was only if we were not grounded. We were not free to veg out in front of the TV after school and were forced to turn to things like books and the outdoors. I think that involved parents are the key to raising children that are aware.
