Now if someone had told me that, I might have had a kid! But nooo, don't eat this, don't drink anything worth while (water? juice? what happened to alcohol & caffeine? major food groups...). The denial of all things good in life didn't make it sound so appealing...

Well, Glinda's experience is more recent. Alcohol in certain forms is a known appetite stimulant, but I wouldn't have thought beer fit the description. An aperitif, sure. But aperitifs don't come with names like "Blatz."

Thinking it over, we did used to pour beer on the oats of a very fussy horse we used to feed. He was underweight and didn't like to eat all his food, but if you put beer on them (we were supposed to use Guinness, but we were cheap and used Molson's instead) he'd eat every speck of food.

Years ago (ahem, many), I used to read the medical magazines that my father used to get sent. The advertisements which shouted the curative powers of bear and the efficacy of beer in getting older patients(my memory is male) to eat better meals and thereby take in more calories were legion in those magazines and were, of course, sponsored by "America's brewers" or something like that. And I, too, when faced with a colicky breastfeeding baby, resorted to a little bit of wine to reduce my frustration and, as a byproduct, calm my baby also. Now of course, I'd probably be arrested for doing that, but it worked wonders 20-odd years ago, I can tell you.

Actually after the Munchkin was born and I was having difficulty breastfeeding, they told me to try beer and wine. And this is the hospital, mind you.

Have you considered taking a Belgian lover? But one can hardly argue with people who press Cognac and Armagnac on one, can one?

Perfect! Except that the french family I married into is of course dedicated to wine, not beer. (And recommends Cognac or Armagnac as necessary...)
