Monday Teeny Poll
By Glinda
Last week’s poll asking about hand-written thank-you notes seemed to garner a response that was mostly in favor of children doing them. However, forty-five percent of the respondents acknowledged that getting your six year old to sit and write them was a task that is far from easy. That being said, some form of thanks is imperative, although I’m thinking that those types of thank-you notes will decrease in popularity. I didn’t say I agreed with it, I just think that’s how it’s going to go.
So this week we are going to deal with the demand for concert tickets. Hannah Montana tickets, in particular. If you have a young girl or tween in your life, chances are you know all about Ms. Montana, aka Miley Cyrus.

Not unless I knew she would write me a Thank You note

It would have to be the combo birthday/Christmas gift, and yeah, she’d have to chip in. It’s something I would probably at least consider doing, however.
I make a small income, but any disposable income tends to go more toward trips and concerts rather than actual material goods. My rationale for this is that any “stuff” that I buy will only last so long, whereas the fantastic memories of the trip or concert will last forever (or until age-related dementia kicks in). I’ve regretted a lot of purchases over the years, but have never regretted a penny that I spent on the Paris trip, or the James Brown concert, or any of the other trips and concerts upon which I’ve spent money over the years.
So I suppose I’m using this same rationale for kids. I’m sure over the years I’ll spend a hell of a lot more than $250 on toys and whatnot. And maybe only one of those toys will wind up being the cherished toy that winds up sticking around past adolescence. So, why not spend the $250 on something that will give your kid an awesome childhood memory, and will also provide some SERIOUS behavioural ammunition (”If you don’t stop sassing me, I’m selling your ticket!”) for months prior to the concert?

Wasn’t it a Hannah Montana concert the terrorist was heading for? ‘Nuff said.

I was about to vote “not in a million years”, but then I remembered that I was young once. It’s easy to forget how important some things are to our kids, even though they seem so stupid to us. If it means so much to her that she is willing to put up her own little savings (mind, it would have to be at least half of the ticket cost), I have no problem paying for the rest.

Here, here for the Occasion and not the Object. My best birthday ever (and most of them sucked major moose eggs, to tell the truth), was when I was 12; my Dad pulled some strings, and he, my Mom and I, spent the day watching an episode of the immortal Dark Shadows being filmed.
For those unfamiliar, it was being backstage, all day, at your favorite soap opera; it wasn’t a show geared to an audience. Heck, they were lucky to get the film in the can, but it was a glorious day for me, and almost balanced out the birthday when my parents went to visit my brothers at Scout Camp, and left me alone.
