Have a Ball

By Glinda

Kewl!

Literally.

There is a very cool ice cream maker called the MEGA Ice Cream Maker Ball.  Basically, it makes the ice cream by having you roll the ball around on the floor, grass, or horizontal surface of your choice to mix the ingredients.  You can leave the kids to it, or the whole family can participate, based on your boredom level.

I know it’s winter, but how many kids do you know that turn down homemade ice cream?

One caveat is that it makes a relatively small amount of ice cream. Still, it’s lots of fun!

If you could make it slobber-proof, you could take it down to the park, throw it around for the dog, and probably sell it! A new industry is born: pet-sitting/ice cream vendor!

Hey-these things actually work really good! My sister in law had one similar to this, but hers came from L.L. Bean. She got me one for my birthday this year and it’s very cool. And, the ice cream you make in it is good!

Or, if you don’t want to pay for it, you can make a less rolling but more toss-able version by putting the ingredients in a sandwich-size plastic bag and then putting ice, rock salt, and the bag with the ingredients into a gallon-size bag–it helps to double bag it. Give it to your kids to shake like crazy for awhile–great (if a little messy) rainy-day activity, especially, or take it outside to reduce some of the mess.

Here’s a link to a good ice cream recipe on a teacher website:

There’s a more delicious recipe with raw egg in it here:

I know people don’t like to use raw eggs, but if you scrub the shells using an anti-bacterial dish liquid before you use them, you can remove 99.5% of the bacteria, since most of the bacteria concerns about eggs are not that they’re raw, it’s that they sat under a chicken.

I couldn’t help but laugh. If Mr. Colby was still alive, I’d be eating ice cream in just a few hours. Hmm…could it double as a soccerball? Might hurt a bit to do a header, but what a reward! :)
