There’s a category missing–”Yes”. Christmas shopping begins in October. Before that, it’s birthday shopping.
One memorable year I couldn’t begin shopping until Dec 23–and I shop for a large family. I survived, but the scars remain.
I do a lot of shopping online, which is a nice time saver. I usually get started in mid Novemberish though.
I start around September picking things up here and there. And I like to do a lot online. A few stores around here have had Christmas stuff out since the beginning of September. I love Christmas (second only to Halloween) but Christmas displays and the music in stores makes me homicidal so I try to finish before the December blitz.
I Loooooooooove Christmas shopping, but as always it must wait till the money gets here. That’s generally around New Year’s, alas.
Do Americans have Boxing Day sales? The day after Christmas is the biggest sale day in Canada and the UK, because everything is like half off. I got most of my Laura Ashleys on Boxing Day for a third of the normal price…the secret is to try everything on the week before Christmas, so you don’t waste time waiting for the dressing room.
Holy cow, raincoaster, anyone who goes near a mall between Christmas and New Years is risking bodily harm!
But the biggest shopping days of the year are on Thanksgiving weekend, which is the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday following the fourth Thursday in November (aka Thanksgiving Day). Most people are ready to start Christmas shopping and have Friday off, so the retailers vie for their business with highly competitive sales. Of course, better bargains follow Christmas, but the selection is patchy, and many people have already overspent and/or burned out their shopping energy.
Clever strategy, to try on the week before. I must keep that in mind, and hope the coveted goods are still there when I return.
Thanks! We don’t have the big Thanksgiving push, because our Thanksgiving is in early October. But don’t set your heart on any specific item for the sales: I have much better luck thinking in general terms like “Jeans” or “Sweaters” than “that purple heathered pullover at Eddie Bauer.”
