Congratulations. That thing is a bottle of “American Champagne” (I believe?) with which she is about to christen the ship. They wanted it done by virgins for superstitious reasons, and as you can see, they had to get them pretty young even then. The reason it looks so bizarre is that they braided it in corn husks so that when it broke, it wouldn’t put anybody’s eye out, which was commendable of them as well as allowing us, more than a century later, to make fun of them.
It must be said that there were some good ones this go-round. It was a hard call.
